A sudden heart attack at 3 o’clock this morning caused the death of Benjamin Luther Rogers, 87, a few minutes later at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. D. Martin, 113 Park boulevard, Highland Park. 

The aged man ate supper as usual last night, read the newspapers and retired in apparently good health. At the hour stated the family was arcused as a result of his fatal condition and before a physician could be called he died. The county coroner was summoned. He made an examination of the history of the case and decided a violent heart attack was the cause of death.

Mr. Rogers had suffered a weak heart from time to time in recent months.

Wife Died in 1921

Born September 10, 1844, Benjamin was a son of Julius Rogers and Roanna Hill Rogers, residents of the Rinehart section of the county, where he spent most of his life. He engaged in farming there but retired a number of years ago. He was married to Nancy Parrish, of the Rinehart section. She died in 1921.

A member of the United Brethren church at Rinehart many years, he was active in religious work until old age incapacitated him. He was familiarly known as “Pa” Rogers.

He was the last of a family of eight.

Only the daughter survives of the immediate family. A son, Daniel W. Rogers, who was a local merchant, died October 16, 1925. There are five grandchildren: Miss Ivel Martin, at home; Arnold Martin, 121 Park boulevard; Ensel Martin, 320 Clay street; Paul D. Rogers, 722 Milford street; and Loren Rogers, Los Angeles, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the daughter’s home, with the Rev. Nelson H. Thorn, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery here.

Final rites will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. D. Martin, 113 Park boulevard, for Benjamin Luther Rogers, 87, who died of a sudden heart attack at the daughter’s home Monday morning at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Nelson A. Thorn, pastor of the First Presbyterian church will officiate and interment will be made in the Odd Fellows’ cemetery.

Mr. Rogers was apparently in his usual health upon retiring Sunday night. The family were awakened about 3 o’clock yesterday morning by his illness and he died before the arrival of a physician. He had been bothered by a heart ailment for some time and according to the report of the county coroner who investigated, a reoccurrence of the disease was the immediate cause of his death.

Pallbearerers, members of the McClelland Bible class at the First Presbyterian church, to which Mr. Rogers belonged were selected yesterday. They are Charles Livingston, J. Racy Lynch, Dr. F. S. Linger, J. C. Moneypenny, C. B. Waybright and B. L Hoffman.
