Mrs. Nathan Goff, West Virginia Senator’s Wife, Dies After Long Illness

CLARKSBURG, W. Va., Oct. 28.–Mrs. Laura Ellen Despard Goff, wife of United States Senator Goff, died at 11 o’clock this forenoon at her home on West Main Street here, after a lingering illness. Her death was not unexpected, Senator Goff was at her bedside when she expired.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Laura Goff leaves two sons, Lieutenant Colonel Guy D. Goff, formerly United States district attorney at Milwaukee, Wis., but lately serving in the judge advocate general’s department of the army in Washington, D. C., and R. W. Percy Goff, a physician of this city.

There are two surviving brothers, Dr. Duncan Lee Despard, of Philadelphia, and Burton M. Despard, of Clarksburg.

Mrs. Goff was a native of Clarksburg. She was a daughter of Colonel Burton Despard and Mrs. Emily S. Smith Despard, now deceased.

She was married to Senator Goff November 5, 1865.
