MRS. BASSEL TAKEN BY ANGEL OF DEATH
Prominent Woman, Life-Long Resident Here, Passes from the Earth.

Mrs. Martha Ann Bassel, wife of the Honorable John Bassel, died in her home on West Main Street at an early hour Friday morning.
Mrs. Bassel was a daughter of the late Judge Charles and Mrs. Ann Lewis, of this city, and she was born June 27, 1841. Her marriage to Mr. Bassel was solemnized February 21, 1867.
The death of Mrs. Bassel is the ending of a beautiful, active, capable and useful life. She was forward in all works of charity and religion, and was always ready to ameliorate the condition of any one in distress or in need. She was a prominent member of Christ Episcopal church for many years and from the organization of the parish aid society to the close of her useful life she was president of it and was deeply interested in charitable works. She was devoted to her family and friends and filled all the duties of her crowded life as an earnest Christian woman, always ready to help those in trouble and sorrow. The poor have occasion to remember her with great compassion.
Mrs. Bassel had been an invalid several years and she passed gently and quietly from the earth as one who sleeps after a long vigil.
Mrs. Bassel is survived by her husband, two sons and five daughters. The sons and daughters are Norval, Edward, Mrs. John W. Davis, Mrs. W. Percy Goff, Cornelia, Mrs. Philemon M. Watson, of Indianapolis; and Martha.
Notice of the funeral will be given after the arrival of her daughters, Mrs. John W. Davis, at Washington, Mrs. Philemon M. Watson, of Indianapolis, and her sisters, Mrs. George K. Smith and Mrs. Ellen Graham, of Columbus, Oh.

CLARKSBURG–Mrs. Martha Ann Bassel, wife of Hon. John Bassel, is dead at her home at Clarksburg. Mrs. Bassel had been an invalid for years. She was a daughter of the late Judge Charles and Mrs. Ann Lewis, of Clarksburg. She is survived by her husband, two sons and five daughters. They are Norval and Edward, and Mrs. John W. Davis, Mrs. Percy Goff, Mrs. Philemon M. Watson and Misses Cornelia and Martha.

Relatives and friends of Mrs. John Bassel filled Christ Episcopal Church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, when the Rev. C. B. Mitchell read the Episcopal funeral service and a solemn musical program was observed. Interment at the Odd Fellows’ cemetery was private. There were many beautiful floral tributes.
